Sermon Title: The Danger of Drifting from the Gospel

Scripture: Hebrews 2:1-4

I. The Context: The Son's Word Is Greater Than the Angels' Word

A. Hebrews 1 establishes Christ as superior to the angels and the word he brings as superior to what came before B. The Old Testament word is not denied or diminished — it is Preparatory and incomplete

  1. Like the first two volumes of The Lord of the Rings, the Old Testament sets the stage but awaits resolution
  2. Genesis 3:15 introduces the seed of the woman who will crush the seed of the serpent — a promise awaiting fulfillment
  3. The Old Testament reveals God's character, his law, humanity's identity, and the nature of the conflict C. In these last days God has spoken by his Son — the final and complete word (Hebrews 1:1-2)

II. The Exhortation: Pay Much Closer Attention (Hebrews 2:1)

A. The "therefore" connects the warning directly to the exaltation of Christ in chapter 1 B. Salvation itself hangs in the balance — the angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who inherit salvation (Hebrews 1:14) C. This is the first of five major warning passages in Hebrews D. The call is to pay close attention to what we have heard — the gospel of Christ

  1. The gospel encompasses: justification for the guilty, adoption for the wayward, righteousness for the unrighteous, resurrection, and eternal home with God
  2. It is a great salvation, first declared by the Lord himself

III. The Danger: Drifting Away (Hebrews 2:1)

A. The image of drifting is nautical — a boat imperceptibly floating away from the dock B. Proverbs 3:21 uses the same Greek word (in the Septuagint) — do not lose sight of sound wisdom and discretion C. The drift does not require active betrayal or renouncing faith

  1. Preoccupation with the sights and sounds of this world is sufficient to carry one away
  2. There is a current in this present evil age pulling away from the Safe Harbor of salvation in Christ (Rick Phillips) D. The truth and teaching of the gospel are matters of life and death and must be cherished and obeyed at all cost (F. F. Bruce)

IV. The Argument from Lesser to Greater (Hebrews 2:2-4)

A. The word declared by angels (the Old Testament law) proved reliable — every transgression and disobedience received a just retribution B. If that lesser word carried such consequences, how much more serious is neglecting the greater word — the gospel of Christ

  1. The Greek word behind "retribution" appears three times in Hebrews (Hebrews 2:2; 10:35; 11:26) and carries the sense of just recompense C. This great salvation was declared first by the Lord, attested by eyewitnesses, and confirmed by signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 2:3-4)

V. Holding the Warning in Tension with Assurance

A. God guards his own — those who have truly believed and are bearing fruit will persevere (1 Peter 1:3-5) B. The call to examine ourselves must be held in tension with looking to Christ

  1. For every inward examination, look to Christ ten times more
  2. Hebrews 12 will call us to look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith C. Christ himself bore the just retribution due his people — the warning is set within the good news of a full and sufficient atonement
