Sermon Title: Purposes of Trials

Scripture: James 1:2-12

I. Trials Show Us What Our Faith Really Is

A. 2 Chronicles 32:31 — God left Hezekiah to test him, that Hezekiah might know what was in his own heart B. Trials function as a spiritual inventory — weak faith whines and complains; strong faith rests in inner peace C. God is omniscient and already knows our hearts; the discovery is for our own benefit

II. Trials Humble Us

A. 2 Corinthians 12:7 — Paul's thorn in the flesh given to keep him from being exalted above measure B. Even those with great spiritual experiences and gifts are prone to pride C. Trials remind us we are dependent on God

III. Trials Wean Us from Worldly Things

A. Material security creates dependence on things we can touch and feel rather than on God B. John 6:5-6 — Jesus tested Philip by asking where bread would come from, to move him off a purely worldly perspective C. Trials reveal that worldly things do not resolve deep spiritual issues

IV. Trials Cultivate Eternal Hope

A. Suffering makes heaven more appealing and precious B. As loved ones are taken, the believer's gaze turns more naturally toward eternity C. The goal is that our deepest longing would be for Christ himself, not merely comfort

V. Trials Reveal What We Really Love

A. Abraham and Isaac — nothing could have been dearer to Abraham, yet he was willing to surrender Isaac B. Luke 14:26 — love for Christ must surpass love for family or self C. God is obligated to sanctify those he has redeemed; he will remove whatever hinders conformity to Christ D. Practical example: holding firm on a moral boundary with a family member may itself be a testimony

VI. Trials Teach Us to Value the Blessing of God

A. Worldly reasoning says grab pleasure and ease while you can B. Psalm 63:3 — God's lovingkindness is better than life C. Obedience to God's word brings true blessing; trials drive us toward that obedience

VII. Suffering Enables Us to Help Others in Their Suffering

A. Those who have walked through a particular trial are uniquely equipped to minister to others in it B. Luke 22:31-32 — Jesus told Peter that after Satan sifted him, he was to strengthen his brothers C. Suffering produces empathy and credibility in ministry

VIII. Trials Develop Greater Usefulness for God

A. Quote from Thomas Manton: God had one Son without sin, but no Son without a cross; the worth of a soldier is never known in times of peace B. Trials exercise spiritual muscles — producing endurance, patience, and trust C. James 1:2-12 — key passage for further study on trials:

  1. Count it all joy when you fall into various trials (James 1:2)
  2. Testing produces endurance (James 1:3)
  3. A submissive will — let patience have its perfect work (James 1:4)
  4. A believing heart and humble spirit (James 1:9-11)

IX. Discussion and Application

A. Genesis 22 and Hebrews 11:17-19 — Abraham approached the trial from an eternal perspective, believing God could raise Isaac from the dead B. Colossians 3:3 — our life is hidden with Christ; setting the mind on eternal things is a present reality, not merely a future hope C. The greatest anticipation of heaven is freedom from sin and perfect, unhindered focus on Christ D. Personal testimony: trials drive harder prayer, greater seriousness with God, and genuine spiritual growth
